Website design & Development

Project Description

CHEAD is a membership organisation for UK institutions with provision in higher education art and design, encompassing around 55 institutions and a mailing list of 330+ individuals. They provide networking and information events for their members and engage in advocacy on national policy issues on behalf of UK Higher Education Art & Design.

The key objective of the project was to design and develop a new website for the organisation, which had become static and obsolete, into a central platform for CHEAD, through which their members could engage with the organisation, and to raise the profile of higher education art & design..

Our Solution

While there were clear functional requirements that had to be accommodated within the project, given the creative audience it was crucial that we developed a highly impactful visual approach that would engage and inspire members.

We adopted a mobile first approach to the design, ensuring that the user experience on mobile devices was the starting point rather than being an inferior version of the desktop site.

The user and organisational objectives had shifted significantly and the current site no longer reflected this. We workshopped with the client to help clarify the finite detail of content types, which then allowed us to develop a structure and hierarchy that would best fit the content.

Fully categorised and filterable library of resources, including meeting papers, conference materials, research and policy papers and networking information.

Profiling Members

We developed a secure members area that provides each member with a mini-site within the CHEAD website allowing them to provide contact info, summary information and a gallery of students’ work.

Events management

The website has a fully integrated event management system, easily updated by staff and members. There is an event calendar that can be filtered by location, date and keyword. Each event has an individual event page showcasing the topic, providing a map and contact details, links to book tickets and downloadable programme.

Responsive & Accessible across devices

The CHEAD website is designed to be highly useable and visually stunning across mobile, tablet, laptop and desktop computers.

We really appreciated that PC were extremely patient and flexible throughout the project. Friendly and approachable at all times, they thoroughly briefed us at all stages and took time to explain how we might wish to approach certain tasks. Similarly, we felt that they listened to any feedback, asking questions fully to understand the exact nature of any queries, and often responded with more than one possible solution and beyond what we could have expected within the agreed brief. Crucially, we felt that PC always treated us with respect and that we could fully trust their advice, particularly given our openly stated lack of experience.
